Broker Margin Rates Compared
Margin is money your broker lends you against your investments. Most brokers charge less per year as the amount you borrow goes up.

Why isn't Kraken listed? Kraken doesn't publish a margin loan APR. It charges a fee of 0.01% to 0.05% every 4 hours on open margin positions (as published by Kraken; source: Kraken, checked on Oct 31, 2026). Its margin trading also isn't available to all US residents.
Why the rates are so different
- Benchmark plus spread. IBKR adds a fixed spread to a benchmark interest rate, so its rates move when that benchmark moves. Many other brokers set their own base rate.
- Size tiers. Borrowing more usually lowers the rate.
- Membership fees. Some brokers, like Robinhood Gold, only give the lower rate to paying members. Count the fee as part of what borrowing costs you.
Margin risks in plain English
If your investments fall, your broker can issue a margin call, which means you have to add cash or they'll sell your investments, sometimes without warning. Losses can be bigger than what you put in.
